Backup & Recovery for Basic Stand-alone Installation

Top  Previous  Next

Never make a backup of the Addressinator database file with the Addressinator program running when using the basic stand-alone installation.

You must have the Addressinator program closed, and no access occurring on the database.

If your situation is such that the database must be accessed and running on a continuous basis, you must move to at minimum the network Firebird database server configuration. Refer to the installation information in this Help file for steps to configure for network use.

What file to back up

The only file that needs to be backed up when using the default Addressinator installation is the ADDRESSINATOR.FDB database file.

This database file is located in the same folder where your Addressinator! program files are.

Default location is C:\Program Files\Ground Zero Tech-Works Inc\Addressinator

Copy the ADDRESSINATOR.FDB database file to a CD or other backup device you have.

NOTE: If using the stand-alone single user default installation of Addressinator! with Vista be aware that if Vista's UAC (user access control) is turned on, you will end up with a "virtual" copy of the Addressinator! database

For example:

let's say that you have a Vista computer, you have installed Addressinator! to it taking the defaults which installs the Addressinator! program and database file to C:\Program Files\Ground Zero Tech-Works Inc\Addressinator

when you log into your Vista computer, Vista actually creates a "virtual" copy of the Addressinator! database from the C:\Program Files\Ground Zero Tech-Works Inc\Addressinator folder into Computer/Users/yourname/appdata/local/virtualstore/program files/ground zero tech-works inc/addressinator and all your data is actually entered into this virtual database file

make sure you are backing up the correct database file that has your actual data in it

This does not occur if Vista users are accessing a networked Addressinator! database, or an Addressinator! database file that is not located in the Program Files folders

Restoring the database

Situation: The Addressinator program is still installed, but an issue with the database requires restoring from backup:

1.Ensure no one attempting to or is accessing the Addressinator database that is to be replaced

2.Rename the existing database to ADDRESSINATOR.FDB.BAD

3.Restore the backup ADDRESSINATOR.FDB file to the exact same folder

4.Log in via the Addressinator program and confirm successful

Situation: Computer has no previous Addressinator  installation

1.Download the Addressinator installation file from the Addressinator web site
