Network Installation

Top  Previous  Next

On initial installation, both the Addressinator! program files and the database are installed to the local hard drive using the embedded Firebird engine which is for stand-alone single computer use.

Firebird is powerful, yet lightweight, with minimal configuration and administration needs. It's easily scalable from single-user, single-database usage up to company-wide enterprise purposes.

Addressinator! also has the ability to use Addressinator! in a network environment (i.e. users run the Addressinator! program from their local hard drive and connect to a network shared database simultaneously with other users) using the network Firebird Server engine or SQL Express or SQL Server

For ease of initial use while testing out the trial Addressinator!, it is suggested to use the embedded default database engine Firebird so you can initially check out all Addressinator! features without having to perform any additional software download, install or configuration.

Once you have confirmed that Addressinator! features meet your needs, and than wish to trial use in your actual network environment to confirm access and speed, perform the steps to either download and install the network Firebird database engine and configuration, or perform the steps to install and configure for use with SQL Express or SQL Server.

Speed and access are highest with SQL Server use, but the difference between SQL and network Firebird may be negligible for most Addressinator! users due to the differences being points of a second.

Do note that once data has been converted from the embedded Firebird to the network Firebird or from Firebird to SQL Server, data can not be converted back.

The embedded Firebird database would be used by those with either of the following:

1.Only one instance of the Addressinator! program will be run
2.Both the program and database are installed to the same computer

The embedded Firebird is installed by default. No additional installation or configuration is needed.

A network Firebird database would be used by those with the following:

1.Multiple instances of the Addressinator! program will be run and/or
2.Database will be shared and accessed by one or more networked computers

The network Firebird engine is available for download via the link found on the Addressinator! web site http://www.addressinator.com/download.htm

Refer to the network configuration using Firebird Server section of this help file  for installation and configuration.

SQL Server  (with all available Microsoft patches) would be recommended to be installed and configured prior to use if you have the following requirements:

1.Database will be shared and accessed by one or more networked computers and/or
2.A higher database performance is required due to the amount of entered data and number of users accessing

This includes SQL Express, and SQL Server 2000 or higher with all Microsoft applicable service patches.

As many factors come into play determining whether the network Firebird meets your needs, or you should move to SQL Server we can not state absolute benchmarks.

In addition to the amount of data there is also the hardware of the server hosting the database, hardware of the computer running the program, present demands on the server, number of user accessing,  and network speed.

Make sure your Windows Explorer is set to display file extensions before proceeding:

1.Open Windows Explorer
2.Select menu View and make sure Details is checked
3.Select menu Tools -> Folder Options
4.Select tab View
5.Make sure Show Hidden Files & Folders is check-marked
6.Make sure Hide file extensions for known files types is not check-marked
7.Click on the Apply button
8.Click on Use Current Folder button to set all views to this same view
9.Select Yes

Now you can see file dates, extensions etc and be able to manipulate files as needed in the following configuration steps.
